GR-0824-6308, Merrill Civil War Carbine, 2nd type with brass butt-plate, brass trigger-guard, brass barrel band and No patch-box. 2 vivid cartouches, this has about the best wood that I have ever seen on a Merrill. The gun appears that it was finished bright originally, it has smooth gray metal on barrel, breech, tang, lock and hammer. Metal markings are all crisp and clear. The metal was most likely very lightly cleaned at some point to remove residue build up on the gun. Most Merrill’s that we have had over the years are beat up, they were guns that were issued and used hard, like the early Burnside carbines. .54 cal. percussion. Rich mustard patina on brass butt-plate and other brass parts. There is some original blue on the rear site. Crisp tight action and mechanics. The bore is excellent. Merrill’s were issued to numerous cavalry units from NY, Penn, NJ, Ind, Wisc, Ky, and Del. Scattered light bumps and dings on the wood, shows evidence of light use but no abuse. Fine to excellent overall.
